Nagpur: Navratri celebrations reached a crescendo on Sunday ahead of Dussehra , with citizens visiting elaborately decorated pandals to offer prayers to Goddess Durga while also spending quality time with friends and family at various fairs. Amid the festive frenzy, families observed Ashtami by inviting young girls for Kanya Pujan , also known as Kumarika Pujan.
As part of the age-old tradition, young girls, revered as manifestations of Goddess Durga, were served traditional meals comprising puri, halwa and chana, along with sweets, fruits and small gifts, while seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.
For many households, the ritual was among the most cherished moments of Navratri, bringing together relatives and neighbours in celebration. While some families performed Kanya Pujan on Sunday, others will observe the ritual on Monday, following their respective traditions.
Beyond the household traditions, Durga Puja pandals across the city witnessed enthusiastic participation, with families making the most of the holiday for pandal-hopping.
At the Rani Laxmibai Durga Utsav Mandal in Laxmi Nagar , thousands of visitors thronged the Mayur Mahal-inspired pandal, created entirely using waste materials. Its elaborate artistic design proved a major attraction, while food stalls and games added to the excitement. “It was an enjoyable outing for the entire family,” said Karen Shah.
The Durga pandal at Dhantoli continued to attract thousands of devotees daily, with a mega fair behind the venue adding to the festive atmosphere. “The various rides are a major attraction for children, and the fair has become an integral part of our Navratri celebrations,” said Rakesh Dwivedi.
With Dussehra approaching, the combination of religious rituals, illuminated pandals, traditional festivities and bustling fairs has created a vibrant celebration of devotion and community spirit.
