The BJP government of West Bengal has appointed veteran film actor Mithun Chakraborty as advisor in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The Bengal government issued this order on Wednesday. He has also been given the status of cabinet minister.
Mithun Chakraborty had joined BJP in a rally organized in Kolkata on 7 March 2021. He addressed election meetings as a star campaigner in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Created an atmosphere against the previous TMC government of Bengal.
The notification bearing the order of West Bengal Governor and signature of Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Aggarwal was issued on 6 October. It said that Mithun Chakraborty is appointed Advisor to the Cabinet Minister in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department of the Government of West Bengal with immediate effect and until further orders. This notification is being issued with the approval of the competent authority in public interest.
For the first time, he has received the award four months after BJP came to power. Several cases were registered against Mithun Chakraborty after his name cropped up in the Saradha chit fund case. Mithun Chakraborty had joined BJP in the background of investigation of scams.
Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced this on September 5 at the foundation stone laying ceremony of 'Uttam Kumar Film Centre' in New Town. Now Mithun Chakraborty has been officially appointed. Apart from Bollywood, Mithun Chakraborty has also worked in Bengali cinema.
Before joining BJP, he was associated with left parties. Later Mamata Banerjee sent Mithun Chakraborty to Rajya Sabha. In 2016, he resigned from Rajya Sabha citing health reasons. In 2017, Mamata Banerjee also honored Mithun Chakraborty with the Mahanayak Award.
