Beginning of Navratri and tradition of sowing barley

The festival of Shardiya Navratri is going to start from 11 October 2026. On this occasion, along with the establishment of Kalash on the first day, the tradition of sowing barley or jowar is also followed in the houses. According to religious belief, proper germination of barley during Navratri is considered auspicious. It is believed that the growth, color and condition of barley indicate the future. However, factors such as soil, water, weather and seed quality also affect barley germination. According to Acharya Madan Mohan, if some important things are kept in mind while sowing barley, then it can germinate well in nine days.

Method of soaking barley

To germinate barley properly, some barley grains should be soaked in clean water the night before Navratri.

Clean the place of worship thoroughly on the first day of Navratri. Then take a clean earthen pot and fill it with pure soil.

Now spread the barley grains over the soil in such a way that they are not too much on top of each other, so that there is enough space for the sprouts to emerge.

correct method of sowing barley

After spreading the barley grains evenly in the soil, add a light layer of soil over them. After this add some clean water.

Here it is important to take care of the quantity of water. It's okay to keep the soil moist, but not too waterlogged. Excessive watering can damage the seeds and affect germination.

During Navratri, keep giving water little by little as per need. Do not let the soil dry out completely or keep it excessively wet.

Recognition of barley color and growth

According to religious beliefs, the color of barley and its growth are associated with various signs.

If the barley is green, tall and well grown, it is considered an auspicious sign, symbolizing happiness, prosperity and financial progress in the home.

On the contrary, yellow or black barley is not considered a good sign. If the barley grows poorly or has stunted growth, it is associated with obstruction in operations.

However, these beliefs have no scientific basis. Growth of barley mainly depends on seed quality, soil, moisture, temperature, water and light.

Importance of long and straight barley

According to religious belief, if barley is long, straight and germinates well during Navratri, it is considered a sign of good health, success and happiness and peace in the home.

The growth of barley is observed with reverence and faith during the nine days of Navratri. During the puja, they are considered as a symbol of Mata Rani's blessings and prosperity.

Things to keep in mind while sowing barley

To grow barley properly, it is important to keep some important things in mind-

  • Choose clean and high quality barley grains.

  • Keep the soil clean and suitable.

  • Do not bury the barley too deeply.

  • Place a layer of light soil over the seeds.

  • Add water only as per requirement.

  • Do not allow water to accumulate in the soil.

  • Keep the container in a place where it can get proper light and air.

  • Take regular care of barley for nine days.

Overall, the tradition of sowing barley during Navratri is linked to religious faith. According to belief, their good and straight growth is considered auspicious. In practice, the right soil, adequate moisture, appropriate temperature and high quality seeds are most important for barley germination.
