A video of Akshaye Khanna revealing that he religiously avoided breakfast is currently going viral on the Internet. In the clip, the said that he never ate breakfast. Reacting to the clip, an oncologist explained that the concept of breakfast being the most important meal in the day was publicised by an American cereal company in the 1900s. The purpose behind this message was to maximise the sale of their cereal, and it was aggressively promoted. But breakfast doesn’t really play such a sacrosanct role in Indian culture, as we believe: “Ek baar khaye yogi, do baar khaye bhogi, teen baar khaye rogi.” (The ascetic eats once, the glutton eats twice, and the sick eats thrice), indicating that overeating is discouraged in Indian philosophy.
Dr Gupta revealed, like the Hungama actor, he too avoids breakfast, and he had noticed a few beneficial effects from removing this meal from his day-to-day life. He cited studies that claimed that not eating breakfast can reduce daily calorie intake from 200 to 400 as an entire meal is being cut out. He claimed he observed a marked decline in gut issues and a less tendency to overindulge in food as his cravings reduced, and he has been able to focus on work much better.
Dr Gupta is a House Staff Fellow – Stem Cell Transplantation & Cellular Therapy at UT MD Anderson.
