New Delhi: India bowling coach Morne Morkel has played down expectations around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s immediate debut, saying the team management wants to stay loyal to its current top-order options despite growing excitement around the 15-year-old.

The youngster has been in focus as calls grow for his inclusion but the former South Africa pacer made it clear that the team is not rushing into changes, especially with experienced players already in place and the decision won’t be easy.

Management backs existing openers

Speaking ahead of the second T20I against England, Morkel highlighted the importance of backing Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who have both played key roles in recent campaigns.

“I think we just need to respect the fact that we’ve got the number one batter in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma. Sanju was the player of the World Cup,” Morkel said.

He added that consistency and trust in players remain central to the team’s approach. “As a coaching staff, it’s only fair to show faith and back your players. Yes, there’s a young man knocking on the door and it’s exciting,” he added.

Morkel also stressed that the management does not want to disrupt batting positions or force changes too quickly. “It’s not as straightforward as saying, ‘let’s play him’. It’s about backing guys who’ve won World Cups and done really well in tough situations,” Morkel said.

Sooryavanshi impresses in training

While ruling out any immediate decision, Morkel admitted that Sooryavanshi has adapted well to the senior setup and has impressed in training sessions.

“At the international stage as a 15-year-old, it can be intimidating, but he’s fitted in very well. The couple of nets we’ve had, he’s been impressive,” he said. He also backed the teenager’s long-term future, saying he will be ready when his opportunity comes. Morkel further praised young pacer Prince Yadav and noted Harshit Rana’s strong return from injury, highlighting the team’s growing pool of talent and balance options.
