Rohit Sharma, who opens the batting for India, faced this kind of sudden dismissal in the first ODI match against Afghanistan , at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. It truly became one of the major discussion points after that. The dismissal happened rather quickly, as if there was some sort of misunderstanding between the two batsmen – Rohit and Shubman Gill, and it led to Rohit’s sudden retirement from the game.

The Indians were already on the hunt in their game; Rohit was looking composed and was making that famous contribution of helping India have a good beginning. And then suddenly – just suddenly, out of nowhere, one moment of misunderstanding took place, and Rohit left the game much earlier than he was expected to.

Rohit Sharma gets out after confusing sprint, costly mix-up

The wicket fell in the 5.4th over. Rohit played the ball towards the left side of Rashid Khan at mid-wicket, then right away called for a quick single. But at the other end , Gill was watching the ball and he was caught behind the bowler… and couldn’t react quickly enough.

When Rohit started running down the pitch , Gill realized what was going on and sent him back. Still, it was kind of too late by then. Rohit had already moved too far and there was no realistic way he could get back safely.

Rashid Khan reacted quick, sending a direct throw towards wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The keeper removed the bails in time. The umpires checked it upstairs anyway, but Rohit was already walking back to the dressing room. Later replays then showed he was short, clearly, of his ground.

This dismissal got attention because Rohit looked upset while leaving the field. He walked back without even looking towards Gill, and very soon fans started debating it on social media. Run-outs are normal, sure, but this one felt different because it came after a pretty clear misunderstanding between the two batters.

India kept rolling, rain-shortened chase

Even after losing Rohit for 16 runs off 16 balls, India stayed on top. The match had been shortened to 25 overs because rain, and India kept the scoring rate steady, not too much wobble.

At 100 for 1, in 11.2 overs, India needed 95 more runs from 82 balls. Gill was the one steering things, making 43 off 34 balls with five fours and two sixes. From the other end, Ishan Kishan stayed strong too, finishing unbeaten on 32 off 19, hitting three fours and a single six.

India also got nine extra runs, so that helped their momentum even more. And with experienced names like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy still due to bat, the home side looked like they had a good shot at closing the chase.

Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled to slow India down. AM Ghazanfar , Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and the rest tried for breakthroughs, but India stayed ahead even after the costly run-out that sent Rohit Sharma back early.
