India captain Shubman Gill added another big, kinda major achievement to his growing set of records in the first ODI vs Afghanistan at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. The right-handed batter, you know, became the second fastest player in ODI history to get to 3000 runs, and it happened in this game like it was just another day at work.

Gill reached that milestone in his 62nd ODI innings and basically stepped into a super tight circle of batters who’ve made real dent in the format. Only former South Africa opener Hashim Amla has reached the same landmark quicker, he did it in 57 innings, so yeah Gill is right there.

Once again, the record put a spotlight on Gill’s consistency in ODI cricket. Since debuting, he’s turned into one of India’s most reliable batsmen, and he has kept scoring runs against almost every important team, basically.

Gill joins Hashim Amla in exclusive ODI list

Hitting 3000 ODI runs is already a huge thing for any batter, but getting there in 62 innings makes it feel even more special, you could say it’s a faster rhythm. Before this match, the top of that list was held by Hashim Amla on 57 innings. Gill has now moved ahead of a few big names, including Shai Hope, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq… all of them needed 67 innings to reach the mark.

The Indian batter built his ODI journey with sharp openings, huge centuries and steady performances. He can score quickly while keeping things controlled, and that combo has made him one of the most effective ODI batsmen in this current generation.

Milestone during another solid Gill show

Hashim Amla 57
Shubman Gill 62
Shai Hope 67
Fakhar Zaman 67
Imam-ul-Haq 67

This milestone also came while he played another impressive knock. From early on he looked settled, and he kept the scoreboard moving even with the pressure coming from a rain-shortened chase. His batting against both pace and spin showed, pretty clearly, why he’s being seen as one of the top batsmen in world cricket right now.

Gill led India’s chase against Afghanistan

Gill’s record showed up while India were chasing a revised target in a match cut down to 25 overs because of rain. After Rohit Sharma was run out for 16 due to a misunderstanding right in the middle, Gill stepped up and took charge of the innings.

At the moment he reached 3000, Gill was not out on 68 off 49 balls. His innings had ten boundaries and two sixes. He kept firing at the right times, a lot of attacking strokes, and made sure India stayed in firm control of the chase.

Ishan Kishan also contributed before being dismissed by Rashid Khan for 34 off 22 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter found the rope three times with fours and once with a six in that quick cameo. Shreyas Iyer was on 6 when he came in alongside Gill.

India got to 134 for 2 in 15.5 overs and needed just 61 more runs from 55 balls. The side still had plenty of batting depth left too, with KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and others still waiting in the wings.

Afghanistan’s bowling attack couldn’t really slow the run flow. Rashid Khan got one wicket, but the other bowlers were still searching for breakthroughs. Still, the day belonged to Shubman Gill, whose record-breaking innings added yet another chapter to his ODI story.
