New Delhi: IPS officer-turned-politician K. Annamalai is likely to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a meeting with the party chief Nitin Nabin later today, according to an NDTV report.
Annamalai is the former Tamil Nadu BJP chief, and the decision came out nearly a month after the Tamil Nadu Assembly poll results came out, where the BJP just secured a seat out of a 234-member House.
According to the NDTV sources, Annamalai claimed that there is no future or opportunity for him in the BJP. Ahead of Annamalai’s birthday on June 4, posters featuring slogans like ‘Our leader, come and lead us’ have been seen on the streets and roads in the city.
Annamalai said he will sit down and talk in two days, addressing reporters at the Chennai Airport to catch a flight to Delhi. More interestingly, the vehicle in which he arrived at the airport didn’t have any BJP flags on it.
Decline Rajya Sabha seatAccording to sources, the BJP also offered a Rajya Sabha seat to Annamalai, but he refused it as he is moving towards launching a movement first and then forming his own party.
The movement will be on a larger scale and seek to attract volunteers from diverse professional and social backgrounds, aiming to build a strong network.
Annamalai already runs a non-profit leadership initiative, ‘We The Leaders,’ which will likely serve as the foundation of his dream of a larger political project.
According to an NDTV report, Annamalai’s new political outfit could contest the upcoming Assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu to test his popularity and leadership strength.
Earlier, Annamalai criticised the Centre over the three-language policy by the CBSE in the recent development in his clash with the BJP.
Annamalai was an IPS officer in Karnataka before he resigned from the civil services and joined the BJP in 2020. He became the state vice president immediately and then was elevated as Tamil Nadu BJP chief.
