A convenience store worker in Malaysia has been suspended for hurling a hot bowl of oden, a Japanese one-pot stew, at a delivery rider.

A 23-second video circulating on social media shows the worker throwing the bowl from behind the counter at a FamilyMart outlet in Kota Damansara Township, local newspaper The Rakyat Post reported.

The employee was then seen turning and walking away from the rider.

The video does not show why the employee decided to do so, according to AsiaOne.

An Internet user claiming to be the rider later wrote on X that he had asked staff about his order before a female employee responded rudely and threw the oden at him on Thursday.

Responding to comments on its Facebook page, FamilyMart Malaysia said: “Our team is investigating the incident with urgency and the staff (allegedly) involved has been placed off duty.”

“FamilyMart does not tolerate any rude, unsafe, or disrespectful behaviour towards anyone at our stores,” it said. “Please be assured that this matter is being handled seriously, and we will take action.”

While the cause of the dispute remains unclear, many social media users voiced concern that the hot soup could have caused burns, The New Straits Times reported.

“The oden soup is hot — what right does the FamilyMart worker have to throw hot soup at the rider? This kind of thing should be taken to court,” one user said.

Another commented: “Even if the Grab rider was involved in a verbal argument, you still cannot justify throwing something hot at him.”
