One of the creative forces behind the hugely popular crime drama has given fans a glimpse of what lies ahead in the upcoming series.
Following its gripping multi-cliffhanger finale, viewers have been desperate to discover what comes next in High Potential.
In the closing episode of the Disney+ smash hit, not only were several mysteries left unresolved, but the fate of one key character was also left in the balance, leaving devoted fans deeply concerned.
For the uninitiated, High Potential is a procedural crime drama that follows single mother Morgan, whose extraordinary intellect and unconventional talent for cracking cases leads to an unlikely yet formidable partnership with a seasoned, by-the-book detective.
The show is in fact adapted from the French-Belgian series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (HPI). The American version was created by Drew Goddard, who previously worked on productions including The Good Place, Lost and Netflix's Daredevil. Goddard also wrote the screenplay for the recent blockbuster sci-fi adaptation Project Hail Mary.
Deadline reports that Goddard, alongside Kaitlin Olson who portrays lead character Morgan, both attended a For Your Consideration event to discuss the show's prospects. While the pair were understandably reluctant to reveal too much, they offered an insight into what is currently being deliberated behind closed doors, reports the Mirror.
Although the production is presently seeking a new co-showrunner following the exit of Todd Harthan, it appears the writing team has already begun laying the groundwork for a third series.
Goddard addressed the central question that will drive the new episodes, steering it in a fresh direction. He said: "Season 2, for Morgan, was about [the fact that] she's lived her whole life having these abilities that cause so much chaos and pain in her life, and she finally found a place where she is appreciated for that very thing, and she was actually enjoying it
"So now, she's enjoying her job and being good at it, I think the next obvious question looking forward is: okay, but now you, the person who has been speaking truth to power, are starting to be in a more powerful position, what does that mean?
"How do we explore the moral implications of that and stay true to her? I think that's going to be the interesting question that launches us into Season 3."
Nevertheless, despite the probability that the new series will delve deeper into long-running storylines, including the enigma surrounding what became of Morgan's ex-husband Roman, the procedural, case-of-the-week format of the show will remain intact - a welcome relief for devotees drawn to the murder mystery aspect of the series.
Another lingering question surrounding the future of High Potential concerns a potential romantic storyline between Morgan and her partner Karadec. Olson has also weighed in on this matter during a recent interview.
She told People magazine: "I want these characters to be well-rounded. Yes, he's a by-the-book cop, but he's also a human being, so I wanted to make sure that you were able to see his heart, and you do with his relationship to Morgan. That was so important. Whether they're going to end up romantically involved or not, you see that these people really do have love for each other."
High Potential is streaming on Disney+.
