Canadian cricket is once again embroiled in controversies. The International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit began investigating allegations of corruption to Canadian Cricket. According to the report, this investigation is going on in two separate cases, in which violations of rules were suspected at both international and domestic cricket level.

These allegations have been revealed in a documentary program ‘Corruption, Crime and Cricket’ by Canadian public broadcaster CBC. In this 43-minute film, many serious questions have been raised on the administration and functioning of Canadian Cricket.

Was there match fixing in T20 World Cup 2026?

It has been claimed in the documentary that there is a possibility of foul play in the match played between Canada and New Zealand during the recent Men’s T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka. Especially the fifth over of New Zealand’s innings is being investigated. At that time, Canadian captain Dilpreet Bajwa had come to bowl. He was made the captain just three weeks before the start of the tournament. Bajwa is primarily a batting all-rounder and bowls off spin. When they came to bowl, New Zealand’s score was 35 runs for 2 wickets.

Cricket Canada under doubt

Canada started with fast bowlers Jaskaran Singh and Dillon Heyliger, but both gave away a lot of runs in the initial overs. After this, spinner Saad Bin Zafar was brought in in the third over, who bowled a wicket maiden over. Heiliger took one wicket in the fourth over, but in the fifth over, Bajwa gave away a total of 15 runs including no-balls and wides, which is now under investigation.

Former coach of Canadian team made big allegations

The second case is to former coach of Canada team Khurram Chohan. In a leaked audio recording, he alleged that some senior board members of Cricket Canada exerted pressure in team selection. Attempts at match fixing are also mentioned in this audio. However, gathering solid evidence to prove these allegations remains a challenge.

Andrew Fgrave, interim general manager of the ICC’s integrity unit, said the ACU was aware of the program but could not comment on the allegations at this time under investigative rules. He said that the three main responsibilities of ACU – Intelligence, Prevention and Investigation, work together.

Former coach Dassanayake has also talked about pressure

In the documentary, former coach Pubudu Dassanayake also claimed that he was put under pressure in the team selection for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He alleged that some players were forced to join the team and threatened to terminate their contracts if they refused. Dassanayake has now also filed a case against Cricket Canada for wrongful termination.

Canadian cricket has also gone through administrative turmoil in the past year. The matter of appointment and then removal of former CEO Salman Khan was also controversial. He has been accused of theft and fraud, which he has denied. Recently Arvinder Khosa has been elected as the new board chairman.

Apart from this, there was a delay in the players getting the prize money for the 2024 T20 World Cup and the players remained without contracts for some time in 2025. The documentary also mentions allegations to organized crime, although this matter is said to be outside the scope of the ACU.
