The UK could be hit by a cold snap later this month that could last up to 66 hours and bring freezing temperatures across the country.

The latest weather maps issued by WXCharts.com are showing rain and snow approaching the country on 6am Thursday, April 23, but wintry conditions are expected to last until midnight on Sunday, April 26.

Maps also show cold temperatures between 0 and -3 °C across the whole of the UK. While rain is expected to hit the entire country, snow is likely to affect Scotland and the north-west of England. Some snow is also likely to fall in the North east of England and the Midlands on Friday. Temperatures will also drop in Wales.

The weather, however, just like the last couple of weeks, is likely to remain unsettled. A Met Office forecast covering April 23 and 24 read: "High pressure to the north or northeast of the UK will bring plenty of dry weather and sunny spells for most at first.

"Low pressure in the Atlantic will try to push weather fronts towards the UK from the south west, but these may remain slow moving. Some parts of the east coast could be on the chilly side with low cloud and onshore breeze, but further west it will likely feel quite warm, especially in sunnier areas.

"From next weekend and into the start of the following week, there are signs that more unsettled weather could return for a time, bringing rain or showers to some areas."

WXCharts also shows freezing temperatures across much of the UK on Saturday, April 25. As per usual, the coldest areas will be in Scotland and the North of England, but temperatures in Wales and the South of England will still be relatively low, nearing 0 in some areas. Additionally, many parts of the country should prepare for showers and changeable weather, according to WXCharts and the Met Office.

April has been a mixed month in terms of weather in the UK, with some areas experiencing temperatures soaring into the mid 20s with sunny days that resemble early summer.
