India on Monday reiterated its call for restraint and diplomacy amid the escalating tensions in West Asia, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar telling the Lok Sabha that New Delhi’s immediate focus remains the safety of the Indian community in the region and the protection of the country’s strategic interests.

Making a suo motu statement in the Lower House on the unfolding conflict, Jaishankar said India continues to advocate de-escalation while keeping a close watch on the rapidly evolving situation.

Speaking amid loud sloganeering by opposition MPs demanding a full-fledged debate on the West Asia situation, the minister said developments in the region are a matter of deep concern for India.

Developments in the region are a cause of deep concern to all of us, Jaishankar said.

He added that Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation and that various ministries are coordinating to ensure an effective response to emerging developments.

Outlining the government’s approach, Jaishankar said India’s position rests on three key pillars — pushing for peace, safeguarding Indians abroad and protecting national interests.

"We advocate de-escalation, restraint and ensuring the safety of civilians," he said.

"The wellbeing and security of the Indian community in the region is our overriding priority. We will continue to work with the governments of the region towards that end," the external affairs minister said.

Jaishankar also stressed that India’s broader national interests would remain central to its approach, particularly given the region’s significance for energy supplies and trade.

"Our national interest, including energy security and trade flows, will always be paramount," Jaishankar said.

Referring to the government’s earlier statement on the crisis, he reiterated India’s long-standing position that dialogue remains the only viable path to stability.

"We continue to believe that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions. It is also imperative that sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries is respected," he said.

The minister warned that the conflict has continued to intensify in recent days, leading to a sharp deterioration in the security environment across the region.

His statement came amid growing global concern over the escalation in West Asia and its potential ripple effects on regional stability, energy markets and international trade routes.
