In a major social security push, the state government has integrated a one-time summer bonus of ₹2,000 with the monthly pension for March, ensuring that those on the margins of society receive enhanced liquidity during the peak summer months. This fiscal intervention, which also extends to the Nilgiris tea sector and coastal fishing families, marks a significant scaling up of the state’s "Dravidian Model" of welfare, focusing on direct benefit transfers to mitigate the rising costs of living for the underprivileged.

Responding to widespread requests from marginalized communities, the Tamil Nadu government has extended the summer relief benefits beyond the women's rights scheme. Chief Minister MK Stalin confirmed that the government has fulfilled the requests of senior citizens, widows, aged transgender individuals, and the differently abled. A special relief amount of ₹2,000 has been credited alongside the March monthly pension to alleviate financial distress.

Breakdown of Beneficiaries and Payouts

The scale of the disbursement covers several distinct categories of social security scheme users. A total of 29.29 lakh beneficiaries, comprising the elderly and widows, have received a combined payout of ₹3,200 each this morning. Additionally, 5.92 lakh differently abled individuals were credited ₹3,500 each. Furthermore, the families of 2.58 lakh differently abled persons who receive maintenance allowances have been granted ₹4,000 each. Relief for Fishing and Farming Communities

The welfare measures also address specific seasonal challenges faced by the state's primary sectors. For the fishing community, the government is providing a fishing ban period allowance of ₹8,000 per family for the period of April to June, benefiting approximately 1,62,900 families. Simultaneously, the government has allocated ₹8.53 crore to support 14,870 tea farmers in the Nilgiris. This funding ensures a floor price of two rupees per kilogram for green tea leaves purchased through 15 cooperative tea factories, providing a vital price cushion for small-scale growers.
