Mumbai's Ban on Pigeon Feeding

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has officially prohibited feeding pigeons in Dadar's pigeon feeding area, following directives from the Maharashtra government and orders from the Bombay High Court. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Jaydeep More stated that they are acting in compliance with the court and state government mandates. The municipal body had sealed off the area on August 2, citing serious respiratory health risks associated with pigeon droppings. In its ruling on July 30, the Bombay High Court instructed authorities to impose fines on violators and file FIRs under Section 271 of the BMC Act.

Fines Imposed on Offenders Over 100 Fines Issued So Far

According to reports, more than 100 individuals have been fined ₹500 each for feeding pigeons in the Dadar area. Medical professionals have backed this initiative, highlighting the respiratory diseases such as histoplasmosis, allergic alveolitis, and cytochosis that can arise from inhaling particles from dried pigeon droppings. Additionally, over 25 bags filled with bird feed have been confiscated. Temporary barriers have been removed, and with the assistance of volunteers and animal welfare activists, approximately 2,000 pigeons have been carefully transported to shelters.
